The Community Organization Working for Stewardson has announced that Stremming’s Custom Cabinets is the winner of the May Beautiful Yard Contest. Their place of business has been newly landscaped with window boxes, hanging baskets, shrubs, hostas, lilies, and flowering plants. Many residents and businesses of Stewardson have worked hard to get their yards in top condition, to improve their landscaping, and to help in the overall beautification of Stewardson. The Housing and Beautification Action Team of C.O.W.S. wants to recognize these beautiful yards. More winners will be announced in June, July, August, and September. All Stewardson residents are encouraged to participate!

Little Library Showing in Stewardson

The Little Free Libraries of Stewardson, Illinois, are celebrating their first year of operation with an event for the whole family brought to you by the C.O.W.S. (Community Organization Working for Stewardson).  Sunday, May 18, at 3 PM, come to the Stewardson Community Center to get your map of the town and its libraries.  As you walk, drive or bike ride through town, visit each library and receive a stamp from the steward at each library.  There are 10 libraries for you to find!  After your map is full of stamps, return to the community center for refreshments, story time at 4:30 PM and enter for your chance to win an Amazon Kindle!  Story time will be extra special with some of your favorite characters reading to the children in person.  We hope you can join us for this special afternoon.  If you need more information, contact Autumn McCormick at 217-690-8930 or check out our website on Facebook “Little Free Libraries of Stewardson, Illinois”.

Betty Mahnke has placed a Little Free Library on her busy Stewardson corner. LFL #10901 is located at 425 N Vine St in the northwest corner of town. Her library has a dollhouse appearance with wallpaper decorating the inside and a small attic of children’s books available on the south side. Betty has been in her house since 2001, a work in progress with recent renovations. She enjoyed making her library with Larry Schultz and wanted it to be similar in color to her house. Betty’s book preferences include biographies, autobiographies, Christian books especially Billy Graham’s latest, mystery books, gardening and nature books. Betty would love for you to stop by and visit her quaint library.

Little Free Libraries began in Wisconsin in 2010. Since then, it has become an international sensation with LFL’s popping up in urban and rural areas. Little Free Libraries promote literacy and the love of reading while fostering a sense of community and connection. The Little Free Library website has a Google map with all the little libraries located by coordinates on it, go to to see Betty’s #10901.

If you see a book that interests you in Betty’s library, please take it to read. If you have a book to share, bring it to Betty’s library. The idea is “take a book, bring a book,” a free book exchange in your neighborhood. Betty keeps her library stocked with books and magazines that interest her and her readers. If you don’t have a book to share, not to worry, please come and take a book anyway.

Upcoming Snow Storm Update

Due to the upcoming increment weather the country roads of Prairie Township will not be plowed but for only emergency’s until the snow and high winds subside. In case of an emergency the township building can be called at 217-682-3220. If you don’t have to travel, don’t the below zero temperatures can be dangerous. If you do be sure to have plenty of blankets and winter attire with you in case you are stranded.
